Jet Airways cuts fares on some local routes

India's leading private domestic airline Jet Airways has slashed business class travel fares on some routes by between 11.83 and 21.88 per cent with effect from July 1.

The airline said in a statement issued late on Friday the fares had been slashed on travel from Bombay to Bangalore, New Delhi, Madras and Calcutta.

Earlier this week, Jet's state-run rival Indian Airlines cut fares on a few busy routes by between eight and 16 per cent to counter slack demand.

A Jet statement said the airline had also introduced special fares on return economy class travel between Bombay and the four cities. It said the revised fares were valid until August 3.

Jet, which upstaged Indian Airlines to be the market leader last year, operates 215 flights daily to 39 Indian cities with a fleet of 28 Boeings and five turbo-props.

India's domestic air passenger market experienced a growth of nine per cent in 2000, but the market has grown by only 1-2 per cent so far this year reflecting a slowing economy.
