WiLL threat stumps cell behemoth, basic foray discountedBS Corporate Bureau The mega-entity formed through the merger of the cellular operations of BPL Communications and Birla-Tata-AT&T will stay out of basic telecom operations. While the BPL group and the Tatas plan to utilise their licences independently, the Aditya Birla group, which has letters of intent for 7 basic circles will not proceed with any. Senior Birla group officials told Business Standard that the group had received LoIs for 7 circles through Birla AT&T, but the move was "entirely pre-emptive" following the government's decision to allow wireless in local loop. However, with Tata Cellular set to merge with Birla AT&T -- the actual merger is yet to take place -- the licences will automatically revert to Batata. Now that Batata will be merged with BPL Communications, the same licenses will subsequently get transferred to the new merged entity as well. Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla group, said, "The merged entity will not get into the basic telecom business, at least for now. May be sometime later, we can review the situation." BPL Cellular and BPL Mobile, on the other hand, had bid for 13 circles each but are yet to get LoIs for any. The Tata group has bid for around a dozen basic circles through Tata Teleservices, and have also received "a few" LoIs. The Tatas are drawing up a blueprint to aggressively proceed with their basic plans. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO READ:
