Fortis plans Rs 10 billion outlay for speciality hospitals

BS Corporate Bureau

Fortis Healthcare Ltd is expected to invest up to Rs 10 billion over the next five years to set up a chain of super-speciality hospitals in key specialities, director Malvinder Mohan Singh said at the inauguration of Fortis Heart Institute at Mohali near Chandigarh.

"Fortis Heart Institute is the first step towards crystallisation of my father late Parvinder Singh's dream of setting up a world-class integrated healthcare delivery network in India," he said. The institute was inaugurated by Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal on Thursday.

The 200-bed institute, spread over 400,000 square feet, has cost over Rs 1.55 billion. While Malvinder Mohan Singh and his brother Shivinder Mohan Singh are the main promoters of Fortis Healthcare, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd has picked up a 16 per cent stake in the company.

The institute has been conceived and designed to provide the best cardiac-care facilities to suit the requirements of Indian patients. It is positioned as a centre of excellence, benchmarked against the best international medical systems. Fortis Heart Institute offers the most sophisticated systems, medical facilities and equipment to extend the highest standard of patient care, according to a company statement.

Fortis Heart Institute has installed the most advanced integrated hospital information system which has been specially designed by GE Medical Systems to provide latest technology to benefit patients. The system offers a clear performance edge over other existing medical facilities in the country, the statement said adding that the system integrates all hospital functions online creating a seamless flow of information.

The institute will be connected to six multi-speciality secondary care hospitals at Jalandhar, Ambala, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Simla and Jammu. These hospitals will focus on orthopaedics, neurology, oncology and gastro intestinal problems. The company is looking at either putting up these hospitals on its own or going through the joint venture route with some local players.

Fortis Heart Institute has an affiliation with Partners Healthcare Systems of the US. The institute won the award for the best new hospital design in the world for the year 1999 given by the American Institute of Architecture.
