India amongst 91 most corrupt nations

India has gained the dubious distinction of being one among the 91 'most corrupt countries' of the world. It ranks 20th in the list, according to an international NGO report released on Wednesday.

Berlin-based Transparency International said that India held the 23rd position last year.

Releasing the report in New Delhi, former Chief of Naval Staff R H Tahiliani said: "That is not surprising when one takes note of the fact that none of the progressive legislations, like the Lok Pal Bill, has seen the light of day."

According to the Corruption Perception Index, the poorest countries in the world were also the most corrupt.

"The linkage between poverty and corruption is well established. If our leadership is serious on tackling poverty as it professes, it has to deal with corruption first," Tahiliani, also chairman of TI-India, said.

The Corruption Perception Index score was based on perception of the degree of corruption as seen by business people, academics and risk analysts, and ranges between 10 (highly clean) and 0 (highly corrupt).

A total of 14 surveys were used to reach to the conclusion, and at least three surveys were required for a country to be included in the index.
