CBI recovers huge assets from arrested I-T officialThe Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday claimed to have recovered huge assets from A R Purwar, the arrested Income Tax official, who was remanded to the CBI custody till Wednesday by a designated court in Bombay. Purwar was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 on Friday (June 22) from a contractor, an official spokesman said. The spokesman claimed that Purwar, an Indian Revenue Service officer, presently posted as commissioner (appeal) Income Tax, Bombay, had demanded a bribe of Rs 350,000 for quick disposal of four appeals of the contractor that were pending with the department. The CBI had carried out raids at his official and residential premises and recovered huge assets and other costly house-hold items, the spokesman said. During the search, the CBI sleuths found the accused had three flats in Aabad, New Delhi and Indore, a plot at Agra, accounts in 13 banks besides investments in shares and other government schemes to the tune of Rs 2.2 million, he said. The CBI also recovered a huge cache of jewellery including diamond sets, 45 costly watches - which included international brands like Rolex and Cartier, he said. It was also revealed that the commissioner had travelled abroad 16 times, to the US, the UK, Canada, UAE, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The accused has had his posting from 1984 to 1992 at Bombay, 1992 to 1996 at Delhi and again from 1996 till the date of his arrest in Bombay.
