$ 913.8 mn World Bank loan for India

T V Parasuram in Washington

The World Bank announced four new loans and International Development Association credits for India totalling US $913.8 million on Friday.

This takes India's current fiscal lending to US $2.5 billion.

A bank release said the loans would help India's poverty reduction projects. "These projects support government strategy for equitable access to basic services", said Edwin Lim, Country Director for India.

Reflecting the government's policy to support economic reforms at the state level, two of the loans and credits approved were for reform and poverty reduction programmes of Karnataka.

The Karnataka Watershed Development Project to provide improved services to poor communities in semi-arid regions gets US $100.4 million, while Karnataka Economic Restructuring Project has been provided US $150 million.
