CBI arrests senior I-T official in Bombay

The CBI on Friday arrested a senior official of the Income Tax department in Bombay for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 350,000.

An agency spokesman claimed that A K Purwar, an Indian Revenue Service officer, presently posted as Commissioner (appeal) Income Tax, Bombay was arrested after he was allegedly caught accepting bribe from a contractor.

The spokesman said the deal between the two had been struck for quick disposal of four appeals of the contractor which were pending with the I-T department.

He said while two appeals had been disposed of, the other two remained to be cleared.

Purwar was placed under arrest at his official premises after the agency sleuths carried out raids, the spokesman said.

He said the raids were continuing at his official and residential premises and the accused Purwar would be produced before the designated court on Saturday.
