LG launches thinnest 40-inch PDP TV

Rumi Dutta

LG Electronics has launched the world's thinnest 40-inch digital plasma display panel television, a new variant in the high-definition television category. The product would enter the Indian market by August this year and is estimated to carry a price tag of Rs 0.8-1.4 million.

The move comes in line with the Korean giant's plans to capture the numero uno position in the Asian market by 2003 and in the global market by 2005.

Ken Lee, vice-president and general manager (digital TV division) said: "Our investment for the PDP category would be around $1 billion by 2005. The strategy would be to focus on the industrial market segment."

"We are emphasising on the new display product business such as PDP, flat TV and monitors, liquid crystal display TVs and monitors as the high value products improve the global revenue, and burnishes the firm's brand image too," Lee added.

In the domestic market, Panasonic, Philips and Thomson are already present in this category and LG's entry is prompted by the increasing demand for a higher version of projection TVs.

The domestic demand for PDP sets is projected to jump up to 250 units by the year-end from the current demand level of 100 units. The 40-inch PDP TV is merely 7.8 cm thick, only 1/12 in thickness against other projection TVs of the same class.

According to BW Oh, director of PDP overseas sales, "The marketing strategies would be fine-tuned to meet specific conditions in each country. Our goal at present is to capture 13 per cent of the global market share, which will make us the third-largest player in the 40-, 42- and 60-inch wide. By 2003, LG Electronics aims to be the number one with 15 per cent of the total global demand."

LG Electronics' annual module capacity for PDP as of May 2001 is 3,00,000 units. A second line is expected to come on stream in 2003, which will add another 6,00,000 units, and by 2005 the module capacity is expected to reach 1.5 million units.
