'Star TV business to turn profitable in 16 months'

The core television business of News Corp's Star Group Ltd will be profitable in 16 months, Star chairman and chief executive James Murdoch said on Tuesday.

Star, a pan-Asian satellite broadcaster, has been a money-loser for News Corp, headed by James Murdoch's father Rupert Murdoch, since it acquired the network from young Hong Kong tycoon Richard Li in 1993 for $825 million.

The younger Murdoch, speaking on the sidelines of an industry conference, emphasised that he was speaking of Star's core television business that will finally turn a profit, not the entire group: "The Star Group is a larger group than that. We have a lot of other investments."
