Industry must get used to non-tariff barriers: Govt

BS Economy Bureau

The government on Wednesday said that the genuine non-tariff barriers were a fact the industry should get accustomed to. "There is a need to identify non-genuine non-tariff barriers as some of them are in place to check imports.

While the genuine ones have to be accepted by us, the protectionist NTBs need to be negotiated," economic adviser in the commerce department HAC Prasad said, while addressing exporters during an interactive meeting on tariff barriers, organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations.

Issues that need not be negotiated, but where domestic policies need to be changed like an export-linked FDI policy which can lessen the effect of NBTs as the foreign investors, would also have to adopt similar standards, he added.

Prasad is finalising a report on NTBs, which will help the government in formulating a strategy for negotiations on the issue.

The government has said that the increasing use of NTBs is affecting developing countries as it effectively nullifies the market access that they are entitled to in lieu of elimination and reduction of tariff barriers.
