Olga gets bail in one case; likely to stay in jail for COFEPOSA charge

Uzbek national Olga Kozireva, arrested by CBI on charges of smuggling Chinese silk into the country with the help of two Afghan nationals and 48 customs officials, has been granted bail by a Delhi court but she was unlikely to be released from jail as she continued to be in preventive detention under Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Act.

Special Judge R L Chugh granted bail to the Uzbek woman as the 60-day statutory period for filing of chargesheet after the arrest of the accused had already expired and CBI failed to chargesheet her.

The court directed her to furnish a personal bond of Rs 100,000 and one surety of the like amount.

The court asked not to leave the country without its prior permission, co-operate with the investigation, not to contact any of the co-accused mentioned in the FIR and not to tamper with evidence.

The Special Judge also directed Olga to report to the investigating officer once a month, in case she was granted bail in the COFPOSA case too.

Olga is lodged in Tihar Jail ever since her arrest in August last year under COFEPOSA. She was formally arrested by CBI on April 10 after the agency obtained a production warrant against her in connection with this case.

CBI alleged that customs officials were paid $700 to $800 per big baggage and $400 per small baggage.

CBI had carried out raids on March 30 on the residential and official premises of 48 customs officials accused of helping Kozireva and her two Afghan accomplices.
