Labour strike hits Qualis productionSanjay K Pillai Toyota-Kirloskar Motor Ltd has been hit by labour unrest in the last three days, affecting the production of Qualis. Sources said that two employees from the assembly line were served termination orders and the others, "team members" in Toyota parlance, numbering 500 struck work from Monday. About 200 employees continue to work and the company has mobilised its supervisory and engineering team to take over the assembly line till the striking workers return. Denying that wage issues were the bone of contention, official sources said that the problem arose because of differences of opinion on the appraisal policy followed by the company. Talks were on between the senior management and the workers and a solution would be found soon, they added. Supplies of Qualis have been hit by the strike. The company has an installed capacity of about 100 units of a day, but is presently working at 90 per cent of that. The strike has resulted in a 40 per cent drop in production in the last three days. But official sources said that the company will ensure that production does not suffer and customer deliveries are unaffected. Toyota has a total workforce of about 1,500 with about 700 employees working on the shop floor and the rest being in the administrative and marketing departments. The strike comes at a time when the company has unveiled plans to launch various other models in the country. This includes the launch of three new models manufactured locally and import of at least three more over a period of 5-10 years. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO READ:
