Indian Hotels in shake-up, COO Keswani jumps ship

Reeba Zachariah

The Indian Hotels Company, the flagship of the Taj group of hotels, is carrying out a restructuring of its top management.

Patu Keswani, chief operating officer, business hotels, of the company, has quit to join leading management consulting firm AT Kearney as a director.

Keswani's departure came before the decision by Camellia Punjabi, the high-profile executive director in-charge of the sales and marketing functions of the Taj group, to quit.

Punjabi is one of the last remaining loyalists of former Indian Hotels honcho Ajit Kerkar. Punjabi, Taj officials said, has not yet put in her papers.

Keswani's position will be filled up by Shashank P Warpy, who is currently the chief operating officer of the Taj Air Catering unit.

Warpy had joined the Taj group as a management trainee and has been with the Tatas for 32 years. M S Kapadia, who is at present the vice-president, business development, of the air catering division, is being elevated to fill into Warpy's shoes. Prior to this, Kapadia had been the resident manager of the Taj Mahal in Bombay for two years.

However, it is not known at this point of time who will be taking Kapadia's place. Company sources said, "We have shortlisted 5-6 candidates from within the organisation and a decision will be taken shortly."

Punjabi, executive director in charge of sales and marketing is understood to be quitting the organisation due to "personal reasons".

Senior company officials indicated that Ajoy Mishra, vice president-sales, will head the sales and marketing functions, but may not be as executive director. An official spokesperson said no formal decision has yet been taken on Mishra's future role.

The Taj group of hotels is India's largest chain and has more than 50 hotel properties in India and abroad.
