Alcatel's Indian unit wins order from VSNL

The Indian unit of French telecom equipment giant Alcatel said it has won an order from Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, India's largest Internet service provider, to supply remote servers.

Alcatel will install the network computers at 22 locations where the state-controlled VSNL is expanding its presence, the firm said in a statement late on Wednesday.

It did not give any financial details of the order.

"The execution of the project has started in May 2001. VSNL is an extensive user of Alcatel data communication equipment," Michel Vetil, managing director of Alcatel India said.

Alcatel expects to complete the installation of the servers by December, a company spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Alcatel India offers telecom and Internet-based services and employs 800 people.

It has a manufacturing facility and software development centre at Gurgaon on the outskirts of New Delhi and software centres in Bangalore and Madras.
