Ashok Leyland in German deal for gearboxAshok Leyland Ltd, India's second-largest truck maker, said on Tuesday it plans to make gearboxes designed by German firm ZF Friedrichshafen, which specialises in transmission technology. Ashok Leyland will manufacture the gearboxes at its factory in Maharashtra under license from the German firm, the Madras-based firm said in a statement. The Indian firm plans to use the six-speed, synchromesh gearboxes in its medium and heavy trucks. Ashok Leyland has been manufacturing, under license, other models of the German firm's gearboxes for two decades. The Indian firm's shares were marginally higher at Rs 64.25 in afternoon trade.
