ADB mulls deal with West Bengal by July

The Asian Development Bank is likely to sign an agreement with Indian authorities by July for funding a road project in West Bengal, an ADB official said on Monday.

ADB has agreed to provide $210 million for the $323 million "north-south road" project linking the port town of Haldia in south Bengal to the trading hub, Siliguri, in the north, Frank Polman, ADB's resident representative in India, said.

"Our representatives will be in West Bengal from June 14 to June 25 for appraisal studies and once that is complete, we will sign the (agreement) with the federal government and state authorities," he said.

"If things go well, the agreement should happen soon...by next month itself, if possible," he added.

Polman said the agreement would be followed by negotiations for terms of the loan.

The "north-south road" project would be linked to India's major cities through the "golden quadrilateral" project that aims to connect New Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta.
