No proposal to increase import duty on cigarettes: Sinha

The government does not have any proposal at present to increase import duty on cigarettes, Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

"The import duty is already at the peak level of 35 per cent and there is a special additional duty of 4 per cent besides a countervailing duty," Sinha said responding to supplementaries during the Question Hour.

Stating that it was a "sufficient protection" to discourage use of foreign cigarettes, he said "at present we do not have any proposal to increase the duty".
