Avant! to continue expansion in Asia

R Srinivasan

Notwithstanding the current slowdown in the US software industry, Avant! Corporation, a leading $358-million California-based major, engaged in developing, marketing and supporting integrated circuit design automation software solutions for the rapid design of multi-million gate products, is going ahead with its expansion plans in Asia.

In addition to the expansion of its India development centre in Hyderabad - the only development centre of Avant! outside the US - the company is planning a major research centre near Shanghai in China.

Avant! chairman Gerald C Hsu feels that the incessant demand for bandwidth, the emergence of Internet video transmission and the growth in the cellphone sector would push up the demand for complex integrated circuits, especially system-on-chip technology.

Cellphones require small low-power, mixed-signal system-on-chip integrated circuits. In addition, this market is characterised by very short product life cycle and high volume production.

The India development centre of Avant! provides support to Avant!'s US operations and clients. It also makes design software used by the semiconductor industry, mostly in the US and Europe.

According to M Mukunthan, director in-charge of the Hyderabad centre, in two years the Centre will have 500-600 engineers providing solutions to the clients either on-site or through the Web.

"It is our intention to develop engineers at the India centre to participate in design activities which can be initiated by our US-based principals," Mukunthan said on Monday.
