Gogoi to be A-I acting MD

Puja Mehra

The Appointment Committee of Cabinet has cleared the naming of caretaker managing director, J N Gogoi, as the acting-MD of Air-India.

Gogoi is likely to hold the post until the government's 40 per cent stake in the carrier is offloaded. The government is likely to complete A-I's privatisation by September 30, 2001.

The ministry of civil aviation had earlier sought ex-post facto approval of the ACC for appointing Gogoi as the acting-MD for the national carrier.

Top government officials said Gogoi will also get nominated on the board of directors of the state-owned carrier and will be able to attend all board meetings.

The government had on May 23 suspended M P Mascarenhas from the post of Air-India MD on charges of corruption.

The ministry of civil aviation had issued an order asking deputy managing director J N Gogoi to take the additional charge of looking after the office of the MD.

Since Gogoi was not a member on the A-I board, there was wide speculation that the government will appoint one of the three joint secretaries from the civil aviation ministry who are already members of the board as the MD.

The decision to recommend the caretaker MD's name to the ACC was taken because the government expects to complete the divestment of its 40 per cent stake in A-I to a strategic partner by the end of next month, when the board of directors will have to be reconstituted, the officials said. They also said Gogoi's name was recommended since Mascarenhas is under suspension and the Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating charges against him.

Mascarenhas was accused of acting in concert with certain other officials of Air-India and misusing his official position for showing undue favours to Welcome Travels as Air-India's general sales agent in London in 1993 and 1998.
