TCS in a big European push

Anusha Subramanian

Software giant Tata Consultancy Services has diversified its product portfolio in the European market to protect itself from business fluctuations in any particular sector - a gambit that has paid off. It has bagged 15 new clients.

As part of the new European initiative, TCS is setting up a demonstration centre in Amsterdam which will showcase all its products and solutions, and cater to its entire European market.

TCS had so far been focusing on the telecom sector in Europe, but now has forayed into other segments.

These include - embedded systems, engineering services, ERP implementation, banking services, insurance, transportation and media.

The 15 new clients that the Tata Group company has snapped up are - Nokia, SAAB, the Swedish automaker including Ericsson, Telenor, the Norwegian telecom company and a Danish media house Sobor in the first quarter of the current financial year.

"The 15 new customer acquisitions that we have done are all from the new areas which we are venturing into," said Ajit V Sawant, vice-president, TCS, who is in charge of the European business.

Among the 15 clients, the largest is Sobor which runs a Sunday newspaper called Sondagsvisen. The media house plans to have a completely new software system with seven new modules which include total integration of their various departments like advertising, circulation, distribution and marketing, subscription, editorial and finance.

TCS will be building new software system for the media house in India. According to the terms of the contract, TCS will also be maintaining the systems in India.

For Ericsson, TCS will do all its switching work in India and get all its communication links set up so that global software testing can be done in Bombay.

Ericsson has already set up an offshore development centre in Hyderabad where TCS will be testing software for it.
