Infosys to set up R&D centre for Intel

Infosys Technologies Ltd, India's second-largest software exporter, is setting up a research and development centre for Intel Corp, an industry official said on Friday.

Nasdaq-listed Infosys already counts Intel as its client besides serving a raft of Fortune 500 companies with its army of about 10,000 employees.

Craig Barrett, president of the world's largest computer chip-maker, will launch the centre during his visit to India on August 3, the official who did not want to be identified said.

The launch of Infosys' R&D centre for Intel comes at a time when India's software sector is struggling with a slowdown in orders from the United States, its main export market.

Shares of Infosys ended 0.87 per cent down at Rs 3,621.20 on Friday while Bombay's top 30-share index lost 0.23 per cent.

Indian software companies are now trying to improve profit margins by boosting the share of work done in India for overseas clients rather than at customer sites abroad.

This enables them to perform the work more cheaply and attract more business.
