Accused in Rs 900-mn Canbank fraud surrenders

A top official of a private company, who had fled to Turkmenistan three years ago after allegedly defrauding Canara Bank to the tune of more than Rs 900 million, surrendered before the court in New Delhi, CBI said on Friday.

Ashok Kumar Goenka, director of Premier Vinyl Flooring Ltd, who had fled to Turkmenistan before the registration of case, surrendered before the special judge on Thursday and was remanded to custody for five days, an official release said.

Stating that interrogation of Goenka was underway, the agency said a case was registered against him and the company, of which he was director in 1998, along with some officials of Canara Bank who had connived with him in defrauding the bank.

Goenka was reportedly the honorary consul general for Turkmenistan in India, the CBI said, adding that a non-bailable warrant was also issued against him in November 1998, following which a red corner notice was issued against him by the Interpol.

But the Interpol order could not be implemented as Turkmenistan is not the member country of the world police, the release added.

Goenka was charged with carrying the export business in a clandestine manner by forging the documents, the agency release said.
