CPM asks Centre not to succumb to US pressure on Enron project

The CPI(M) on Wednesday asked the Centre and the Maharashtra government not to give in to 'blatant pressure' by the US administration and categorically state that the terms of the Dabhol power project agreement with US multinational firm Enron cannot be implemented.

Quoting the visiting US Assistant Secretary of State, Christina Rocca, as saying that it would be difficult for foreign investors to view India favourably till the Dabhol issue was sorted out, the party Politburo said the US was determined to protect the interests of Enron and "the threat implied is obvious".

Maharashtra government had been forced to order a judicial probe into the Dabhol agreement, the party said adding that the project "is a standing testimony to how powerful multinational corporations suborn governments to sign illegal and unequal agreements".

"The Vajpayee government, which is responsible for providing the counter-guarantee to this project, must not give in to such blatant pressure," the party said and demanded that the Centre and Maharashtra government "stand firm and state that the terms of the agreement cannot be implemented".
