9.5 million govt employees to strike work on July 25

The Communist Party of India (M)-dominated All-India State Government Employees' Federation and the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers on Friday said that 8 million state government and 1.5 million central government employees would participate in the July 25 country-wide token strike to press a seven point charter of demands.

Representatives of the state level strike committee told newspersons here that the teachers and non-teaching employees also decided to take part in the strike called to protest the hire-and-fire policies, privatisation, downsizing and retrenchment of employees.

"The Centre is out to change the labour laws and snatch the right of workers by resorting to repressive measures," AISGEF's Smarajit Raychowdhury and CCGEW's Ajya Bhowmik said in a joint statement.

Meanwhile, joint secretary of the State Government Employees Federation (Unified) Vivekananda Mondal said it would oppose the strike.
