Govindarajan tipped to be MD of SBI

BS Banking Bureau

The State Bank of India on Thursday appointed Chandan Bhattacharya as deputy managing director, (inspection and management audit) in Hyderabad. He will replace S Govindarajan, who is tipped to take over as the managing director.

In a parallel development, the bank also appointed N K Puri as managing director of State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur. Puri will succeed Madhukar who is set to take charge as the chairman and managing director of Calcutta-based United Bank of India.

SBI also appointed Indrajit Gupta as a chief general manager in international banking. Last month, the bank had elevated four of its chief general managers to the rank of deputy managing directors and 14 general managers to CGMs.

Four new DMDs -- Bhattacharya, Puri, N Sadasivan and S Santhanakrishnan -- were slated to assume charge as and when the posts fall vacant. In the first round, Bhattacharya, at present handling personal banking, and Puri (international banking group) got their appointments on Thursday.

The list of CGMs awaiting postings includes Mythili Rangarajan, Tara Sankar Bhattacharya, R J Chand, T S Vaidyanathan and T K Keshavamurthy.

Govindarajan is expected to succeed Vepa Kamesam as MD. Kamesam joined Reserve Bank of India early this month as its deputy governor. The other aspirant for the post is A K Batra. Batra is holding the portfolio of corporate development officer.

Kamesam was heading the national banking group. The other managing director, Y Radhakrishnan, heads the corporate accounts group. Govindarajan is slated to retire in July 2002 while Batra's stint will continue till August 2003.

In another development, the government revamped the central board of the State Bank of India by nominating five directors for three years with effect from July 17. The appointment has been made in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India.

The new directors are N Srinivasan, vice-chairman and chief director of India Cements, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, chairman and chief executive officer of BPL Communications, Subodh Kumar Bhargava, advisor, Eicher Goodearth, Ekanath Keshav Thakur, founder director of National School of Banking, and Kirit Parikh, emeritus professor of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research.
