Santro LPG variant in offing

BS Bureau

Hyundai Motor Company will roll out the LPG variant of its small car Santro once the Union government issues a notification allowing LPG-driven cars in the country.

"The company is already running LPG cars in South Korea. So it would not be a problem for us to bring in LPG cars once the notification is in place," said A P Gandhi, president, HMIL. The company will import the LPG kits from Korea to meet its requirement in India, he added.

Gandhi believes the LPG variant would be popular with the economy class. "Not only is LPG environment friendly, it is economical as well. I don't think anyone buying a Sonata for more than Rs 11 lakh would be bothered about cost. Moreover, the Sonata is almost Euro-III, so the pollution norms are well maintained," Gandhi added.

The HMIL president was in Calcutta at the launch of the luxury sedan Sonata in the city. Sonata would not have a CNG variant in future, he added.

To step up sales, HMIL plans to move into shopping malls to sell cars, as it has done successfully in the West. The concept of selling cars through malls instead of showrooms was first introduced by Hyundai in the West. "We have always attempted to set new benchmarks for auto industry in India. Once the retail business has matured enough, we will move into malls," Gandhi added.
