Huawei to equip Russian operator with intelligent network

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Huawei Technologies, China's largest telecom equipment manufacturer and network solutions provider, will provide intelligent network equipment to Ufa City Local Phone Corp, a Russian telecom operator.

Huawei's Tellin intelligent network platform has been chosen to enable Ufa telecom deliver newly emerging services in the fastest way while supporting existing services.

Huawei's platform will play a central role in enhancing Ufa's telecom network quality and reducing its operational costs, significantly. The project has paved the way to launch more services in the future for boosting its competitive edge, according to a company's statement released on Thursday in Bangalore.

The platform will provide several Russian standard services, including the prepaid card service, the premium rate service, and the free phone. In addition, Huawei's Honet accessing network and OptiX transmission system will also be installed in the Ufa telecom network.

Huawei has been providing telecom products and solutions to the Russian telecom market ever since it introduced its cutting-edge digital switching equipment to enhance Russian telecom infrastructure in 1995.

In recent years, the Russian telecom industry has witnessed a fast growth and a strong momentum as the country's economy turned around. Its telecom business started to develop from single voice service to integrated business involving prepaid service, virtual private network, IP telephony and others.

The $2.66-billion Huawei had set up its Asian research and development center in Bangalore two years ago to develop cutting-edge technologies that include wide band switching, embedded systems, 3G mobile communications, wireless infrastructure, network management, data communications, intelligent networks, and IP applications like VoIP.

In a related development, Huawei has been awarded a contract by China Railcom, one of the seven-telecom operators in the country to provide optical network equipment.

The deal envisages China Railcom to deploy Huawei's industry leading SDH and DWDM equipment in the populous southwest region of China, consisting of eight provinces and one big city under the direct control of the central government.

The entire project spans 8080km with 110 DWDM nodes, 10 STM-16 four-fiber rings and one STM-16 two-fiber ring.

This is the single largest contract for optical network project of Huawei so far in terms of project scale and contract volume. The company has projected its revenues to double this fiscal to cross $5 billion.
