Reliance donates 5,000 sq ft office block to GujaratBS Regional Bureau Reliance Group, as part of its ongoing rehabilitation efforts in quake-affected areas of Gujarat, on Tuesday handed over a 5,000 square feet office block made from innovative plastic housing system to the state government. Emphasising that in all 20 such office blocks covering a total 100,000 square feet are planned by his company in entire Kutch region, a Reliance spokesperson said that the other 95,000 square feet blocks would be ready by August 2001. The components of these innovative plastic offices have been imported from Canada and are earthquake resistant and cost effective, he added. "Each office block has been designed to suit Gujarat government's requirements as they would be used as offices of various government authorities such as mamlatdar, taluka panchayat, etc, at various locations like Bhuj, Anjar, Mandvi, Mundra, etc," he elaborated. Revealing that Reliance has identified specific projects involving construction of townships using this technology, he said that proposals to build sectors of 200 and 1,500 houses are presently under consideration of the state government. In the first phase of Reliance's rehabilitation initiatives, two plastic houses - one of 30 square metre and another of 50 square metre - were handed over to the state government in March 2001. They were also made of plastic building systems, which are already being used in more than 50 countries across the world, especially in seismic and cyclone-prone areas. Maintaining that this technology is being introduced in the country by Reliance Group and is being used for the first time for mass rehabilitation purposes, the spokesperson said that all the components of these structure such as walls, windows, doors, roof, flooring, etc are made of polyvinyl carbonate. The walls, made of hollow profiles made from PVC, are filled with concrete. The system uses next generation technology and is highly modular as well as flexible and exceeds building codes of numerous countries including quake-prone ones such as Japan, China, Russia, Mexico, etc, he added.
