PwC predicts a big leap in mobile Internet sector

BS Bureau

The PricwaterhouseCooopers Technology Forecast has predicted great opportunity for mobile service providers of all types in the Third World nations to grow into post-paid service providers for e-commerce transactions based on the Net.

This is because in the next few years there will be as many Internet connections through mobile wireless devices as through fixed land lines, and demand for services from such users will surge.

The PwC forecast has predicted a rapid growth in mobile Internet applications in the coming months. But while many of the applications may seem relevant only to developed economies with unrestricted broadband access, "the study also contains great business ideas for companies in India", Roopen Roy, the chief of PwC's management consultancy services wing in India, said.

PwC feels that mobile service providers like cellular phone companies and those linking handheld devices can tap the emerging trend towards mobile Net applications to provide customers e-commerce opportunities. "Such companies can offer customers the opportunity to order goods and services through their network and become payment platforms as well", said Roy.

To overcome payment problems faced by customers and companies participating in an e-commerce transaction, Roy predicts that "the local phone company, which has an ongoing relationship with a customer, will take this opportunity to guarantee payment to the seller and to realise the sum from the customer through its normal monthly bill".

To offer such services, mobile services companies will have to work out alliances with sellers to offer this service and also reach an agreement with its subscribers to secure payments on post-paid basis. The latter can be done through secured payment arrangements already in place between a subscriber and the phone-company through the customer's credit card.

To inform corporates on such opportunities, PwC is currently conducting a series of roadshows across the country. PwC has got good response to the seminars, in which PwC and external industry experts are participating.
