Ram Naik recommends 2 names for IOC top posts

Pradeep Puri

Petroleum Minister Ram Naik has recommended the candidature of Prashant Banerjee, executive director of the western region of Indian Oil Corporation, for the post of IOC's marketing director.

The minister has also approved the candidature of A M Uplenchwar, executive director in the pipelines division of IOC, for the post of pipelines director of the corporation.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet is expected to meet shortly to decide on the two appointments.

The marketing director's post is falling vacant following the superannuation of ON Marwah. The current pipelines director SN Jha is also superannuating shortly.

Banerjee had earlier been selected by the Public Enterprises Selection Board for the post of the chairman and managing director of Gas Authority of India Limited.

However, he could not be appointed to the post following protests from some senior officers in the oil sector who were of the opinion that Banerjee should not be made the CMD of a Schedule-A company since he did not have any board-level experience.

Oil industry sources say that the minister's approval of Banerjee's candidature for the post of IOC's marketing director implies that he is now out of the race for the post of GAIL's chief. Banerjee had been selected by PESB as the leading candidate for the post of IOC's marketing director.

P K Aggarwal, director planning of the Oil Co-ordination Committee, was selected as the other candidate in the panel drawn up by PESB.

For the post of the pipelines director of IOC, PESB had selected Uplenchwar as the leading candidate and PS Rao, executive director of Gujarat Refinery, as the second candidate.
