I-T unions threaten nationwide agitation on July 18

Unions representing Group-C and Group-D officers of the Income Tax department threatened to go on a nation-wide agitation on July 18, against selective promotions of senior revenue officers and alleged denial of due share to junior and non-gazetted members.

Income Tax Gazetted Services Federation officials said more than 1,000 officers who had put in more than 14 years of services are still awaiting implementation of "Cadre Restructuring" scheme initiated by the government for getting their promotion as assistant commissioners.

In contrast to this, they said, the government promoted 72 chief commissioners, 394 commissioners and 562 joint commissioners by June 2001.

The federation said this was against the MoU signed between the government and the Association of Gazetted and Non-Gazetted members of the Income Tax Department.

"For this aborted understanding, the blame lies at the door of Central Board of Direct Taxes. As a consequence of this agitation, the target for higher tax collection, broadening of tax base, speedy disposal of cases and prompt redress of mounting public grievances, will receive a severe jolt," the union said in a statement.
