Centre sending positive signals to end DPC-MSEB row: Cline

US energy major Enron's Dabhol Power Company on Wednesday indicated that it was receiving some positive signals from the Union government for resolving the current imbroglio over a plethora of disputes with its partner Maharashtra State Electricity Board.

At DPC's quarterly board meeting held on Wednesday, Enron India managing director K Wade Cline informed board directors on Centre's initiatives and also about Enron Corporation chairman Kenneth Lay's meeting with the Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha and Power Minister Suresh Prabhu, highly placed sources said.

Among other options, Cline said, the Centre had 'taken positive steps like appointing its nominee on the Godbole renegotiations committee and also directing the Central Electricity Authority to discuss a possible takeover of the $2.9-billion's phase-II'.

Cline also informed the directors about Enron Corp chief's 90-minute discussion with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, the sources added.

They said according to Cline no particular time-frame had been set out to end MSEB-DPC row as the situation was quite complex.

"We have to restore the power purchase agreement, MSEB has to resume offtake of power from DPC...the legal issues are pending before the regulator and the high court...all this is going to take time," sources said.

"The government of India is taking interest and matters will now be solved amicably," they added.
