Maharashtra undecided on probe into Enron dealSwati Kulkarni in Bombay The Maharashtra government is yet to obtain legal opinion on the advisability of ordering a judicial probe into the controversial power purchase agreement with the Enron-promoted Dabhol Power Company. The state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said this after a Cabinet meeting in Bombay on Wednesday. Deshmukh told reporters that the advocate general would be consulted in the matter before taking a final decision on the probe to fix responsibility for the PPA. The chief minister said the issue would be discussed at the coordination committee meeting of the ruling Democratic Front. The Left constituents of the DF have made a strong demand for institution of a judicial enquiry into the DPC agreement with Maharashtra State Electricity Board and even threatened to pull out of the government on the issue. Earlier in the day, Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal told reporters that his party was not opposed such a probe to fix responsibility for the PPA. Bhujbal, who was flanked by state Energy Minister Padamsinh Patil and NCP spokesman Praful Patel, said his party's stand had been consistent on the issue and it was wrong to suggest that NCP president Sharad Pawar had any reservations about desirability of an inquiry.
