5% service tax on 15 more items

The government on Monday notified imposition of five per cent service tax on 15 more items, including banking and financial, broadcasting and several communication activities, from July 16.

The notification said that these 15 items had been brought into the service tax net following the announcement in the 2001-02 Budget.

It clarified that medical services have not been included under the category of scientific and technical consultancy, which would hereafter enter the service tax net.

Likewise, individual photographers and videographers would also be exempted from service tax, which would apply only to photographic studios having fixed place of business.

The other items included in service tax were convention service, leased circuits, telegraph telex, fascimile, on-line information and data base access, sound recording, insurance auxiliary, port and authorised service station for motor cars and two-wheelers.
