Central, state staff to observe strike on July 25More than 9.5 million central and state government employees will go on a one-day nation wide strike on July 25 to demand a halt to downsizing and privatisation of government departments. Before the strike, the employees would observe an 'anti-privatisation day' on July 18 by holding rallies and demonstrations all over the country, the All-India State Government Employees' Federation and Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers announced in New Delhi on Thursday. The employees' main demands are a halt to privatisation and corporatisation of government functions, contractualisation and casualisation of government jobs, downsizing of establishments, abolition of posts and amendments to existing labour laws against workers interests. ''The countrywide massive strike and other programmes being organised by 9.5 million central and state employees of the country are directed against the policy of rampant privatisation, closing down, retrenchment, and downsizing by the central and most of the state governments at the dictates of IMF, World Bank and WTO. Their policy of capitalist globalisation is nothing but selling the country to the MNCs and the imperialist interests,'' the federations said in a joint statement. Among the employees slated to strike work on July 25 are 8 million state government, workers including 1.5 million school teachers. UNI |
