Hero Honda June sales up 35.5%

India's largest motorcycle maker, Hero Honda Motors Ltd, registered a 35.5 per cent jump in June sales to 105,159 units from 77,581 in the same month last year, a company official said on Monday.

Sales in the April-June quarter, the first in the 2001-02 financial year, were up 28.1 per cent to 306,930 units.

Hero Honda dominates India's motorcycle market with its four-stroke fuel-efficient bikes and had a market share of 47.8 per cent in the financial year ended March.

India's Munjal family and Japan's Honda Motor Co each hold a 26 per cent stake in the firm.

The company's motorcycle sales jumped 35.2 per cent to 1,029,591 bikes in 2000-01, helped by shifting consumer preference for motorcycles from scooters.

Hero Honda's Rs 2 face value share was trading up 1.8 per cent at Rs 147.10 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, while the Sensex index was up 0.35 per cent.
