Sinha promises to give reforms a human face

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha Wednesday said his forthcoming budget would try to take reforms to the common people.

He was speaking to newspersons after attending a pre-budget meeting at the prime minister's residence in New Delhi. "Basically, we discussed the economic reforms agenda of the government. An account was taken of what has been done and what remains to be done," he said.

Sinha said his job while presenting the Union budget next month would be to give economic reforms a human face.

The finance minister said Wednesday's meeting would have a bearing on the government's economic initiatives in the months and years to come.

He pointed out that while a major part of the pre-budget exercise is now complete, there are some issues that remain outstanding. The discussion, he said, would continue at a meeting on January 28.

Among those who attended Wednesday's meeting, apart from Prime Minister Vajpayee and Sinha himself, were: Defence Minister George Fernandes, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran, and Minister for Power Suresh Prabhu.
