Bharti Teletech to manufacture phone sets in China

BS ICE Bureau

Bharti Teletech, the manufacturing arm of the Bharti Group, is planning to manufacture telephone sets in China. Though the company will initially undertake overseas manufacturing on a contract basis, it is looking at the possibility of setting up a manufacturing unit in China through a joint venture with a local partner.

V J Prakash, executive director and chief executive officer, Bharti Teletech said, "Once the WTO norms comes into effect, manufacturing in India would be a difficult proposition so we are looking at manufacturing telephone sets overseas on a contract basis. In China, the components are cheaper than what we have to pay for importing them into India."

Bharti currently has a manufacturing unit each in Gurgaon, Ludhiana and Goa with a total capacity of 5 million telephone sets.

Prakash said that manufacturing telephone sets on a contract basis would mean that Bharti would have to invest on "moulds" for manufacturing telephone sets rather than in a full-fledged factory, it would have to invest in making the 'moulds' used for manufacturing telephone sets.

He added that the overseas operations would begin next year. Prakash said Bharti is also in talks with a number of companies for manufacturing mobile handsets in India.

Though the company has the infrastructure ready to start manufacturing, it would do so only after the market for handsets increases enough for the company to start making profits within the first year of operations.

Bharti has recorded a 90 per cent growth in the number of telephone sets manufactured at its three factories in Ludhiana, Gurgaon and Goa. Against 1.8 million sets last year, Bharti rolled out 3.6 million phones this year and aims to manufacture 4.5 million units in the next year.

The company had earned a revenue of Rs 1.50 billion last year from selling telephones, up from Rs 800 million in the previous year. Bharti is also launching new models like e-mail telephones this year with a focus on the retail market.
