UAE phone company slashes India call rates

A United Arab Emirates phone company, Etisalat, has decided to cut its international call charges to 59 countries, including India, from September 1, news reports in Dubai said.

The call rate to India has been reduced from 4.29 dirhams to 3.21 dirhams a minute during peak hours -- 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. -- and from 3.67 dirhams to 2.47 dirhams per minute during off-peak hours -- from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The announcement comes as Etisalat prepares for its 25th anniversary celebrations at the end of August, said a report in Gulf Today.

Call rates to Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Britain, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Sudan and Yemen will be 2.69 dirhams and 1.91 dirhams, respectively.

The paper said Etisalat was slashing call rates due to advancement in telecommunication technologies and cuts in international telephone tariffs in several countries.

Etisalat had last cut its call rates on July 1 last year, a move that benefited 34 countries, including India, the paper said.
