Jet Airways: Indian or foreign?

Divestment Minister Arun Shourie on Friday said it was not clear whether the private Jet Airways is an Indian or a foreign airliner.

''I have been trying to find out one thing. Nobody is able to tell me who owns Jet Airways. Is it an Indian airline or a foreign airline?'' Shourie told Rajya Sabha during a short duration discussion in which Janata Dal member C Ibrahim charged the government with trying to sell Air-India to foreign airlines.

Ibrahim maintained that his United Front government encouraged domestic airlines including Jet Airways unlike NDA government.

''What I have been able to discover through all agencies of government is that Jet Airways is owned by a company called Tailwinds, registered in the Isle of Mann, a tax haven,'' Shourie said.

He said he agreed with Ibrahim that domestic airlines should be encouraged but he was unable to find out for the last three years as a minister whether ''Jet Airways is domestic airline or not''.

Ibrahim, however, asserted that Jet Airways was run by an Indian and the money was in India.
