Top 20 IT firms' revenue up 56%, TCS No 1: Survey

BS ICE Bureau

The aggregate revenue of India's top 20 IT companies has grown 56.1 per cent to reach Rs 273.45 billion during 2000-01 against the overall industry growth of just over 50 per cent.

According to an annual IT industry survey conducted by Dataquest magazine, TCS is the number one IT company in India.

"Despite, a growth rate that was just five per cent above the industry average, sheer size ensured that TCS nudged out Wipro to emerge as 2000-01's number one IT company," the Dataquest survey pointed out.

There are some newcomers in the top 5 club, with Compaq and Infosys moving in and dislodging IBM and HP, which have slipped to numbers 6 and 7, respectively.

Mascon Global was the fastest growing company with a 478-per cent growth taking it from 106th position last year to number 33.

Several other companies have shown three-digit growth: Celetron (140 per cent), Infosys (115 per cent) and Cisco (113 per cent).

As for the region-wise distribution of companies, south India continued to dominate the top 20 club with nine companies coming from the region. Delhi-Noida came next with seven, while Bombay contributed the remaining four.

Infosys had a spectacular year with a growth of 115 per cent. According to the survey, it has also doubled its workforce from 5,389 to 9,831. Slipping from the first to second slot, Wipro showed a growth of five per cent below the industry average of 20.3 per cent.

While, Wipro Technologies outpaced industry growth rates with a 70 per cent jump in revenues, it was Wipro Infotech that pulled the final tally back, growing at a more sedate 37 per cent.

Another big success story was that of Compaq, the PC vendor that entered India only in the mid 1990s. It acquired an established systems and solutions company in 1998-99, while entering the top 20 at number five in 1998-99.
