JPC to seek extension: chairman

The Joint Parliamentary Committee inquiring into the stock market scam will seek an extension as the decision to entrust it with the further responsibility of investigating the UTI muddle will add to its already pending work, JPC chairman Prakash Mani Tripathi said on Friday.

"We will seek an extension as lot of areas need to be covered. Moreover, the decision to entrust us with the UTI probe will enlarge our area of work," he said in New Delhi.

"Cancellation of some meetings due to pre-occupation of the members has also prompted us to seek extension," he added.

After a week of wranglings on the UTI muddle, the government and the opposition on Friday agreed to a probe on it (UTI) by the JPC already inquiring into the stock market scam.

Tripathi said it has been decided not to hold any JPC meetings during the current Parliament session as the members have other areas of work to attend to.

"We will provide the members a week's rest after the completion of the session this month-end and hold frequent meetings thereafter to complete the work," he said.
