Intel chief Barrett opens Infosys-Intel R&D lab
"The Infosys-Intel Lab is the first e-business solutions lab of its kind and will focus on building practices on Intel architecture platform," a joint statement said. It said Intel, the world's largest computer chip maker, will provide the necessary hardware, software and technical information to enable Infosys to develop the software applications built on Intel's platforms. Nasdaq-listed Infosys already counts Intel as its client besides serving a raft of Fortune 500 companies with its army of about 10,000 employees. The launch of Infosys' R&D centre for Intel comes at a time when India's software sector is struggling with a slowdown in orders from the United States, its main export market. Indian software companies are now trying to improve profit margins by boosting the share of work done in India for overseas clients rather than at customer sites abroad. This enables them to perform the work more cheaply and attract more business. Infosys' shares were up 1.13 per cent at Rs 3,815 at the Bombay Stock Exchange in afternoon deals, while the Sensex was up 0.51 per cent.
