Kiran Karnik may be named Nasscom president

Bipin Chandran

Kiran Karnik, former Discovery India chief Kiran Karnik, former head of Discovery India, may be the next president of Nasscom.

He is one of the strong contenders for the post, which fell vacant after the sudden demise of Dewang Mehta.

According to industry sources, Nasscom has not informed Karnik officially about this. However, they indicate that Infosys chairman NR Narayana Murthy informally discussed the issue with Karnik.

When contacted by Business Standard, Karnik refused to make any comments on this. Having worked with ISRO earlier and having set up Discovery India later, Karnik has a rare combination of a scientist and a top quality manager. He had left Discovery India earlier this year.

Dewang Mehta died in Sydney on April 12 this year. Nasscom had since been looking for a person to replace Mehta. The software association had also appointed HR consultancy firm Cornferry to look for Dewang's successor. Nasscom will formally announce the name of the new president on Monday.
