MTNL, WorldTel in Bangladesh telecom pact

State-run telecom giant MTNL has tied up with WorldTel to offer fixed-line telephone services in Bangladesh, the Press Trust of India said on Monday.

"WorldTel has acquired the licence for offering services in Bangladesh and MTNL will install and maintain and manage the entire system," the news agency quoted MTNL chairman Narinder Sharma as saying.

PTI quoted Sharma as saying the two partners were involved in discussions on investments and revenues.

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, in which the government owns a 56 per cent stake, is the country's largest listed telecom firm. It operates fixed-line, cellular and Internet access services in Bombay and New Delhi.

PTI quoted Sharma as saying the project would be operational later this year after a new government took charge in Bangladesh following elections in October.
