TomTom released the 14th edition of its annual Tom Traffic index that examined road congestion across 500 cities globally in 2024, including India’s worst-affected.
Kolkata ranks as the most congested Indian city, with an average travel time of 34 minutes and 33 seconds, per 10 km, due to its densely-populated, narrow streets.
Bengaluru follows closely at 34 minutes and 10 seconds, per 10 km. The pace of road development has not matched the city's rapid IT boom and urbanisation.
Pune, surprisingly at No 3, experiences severe congestion at 33 minutes and 22 seconds, per 10 km, due to poor road planning and the continuous rapid expansion of the metropolis.
Hyderabad, at 31 minutes and 30 seconds, per 10 km, struggles with increasing vehicles despite a metro and the development of flyovers.
Chennai and Mumbai remain highly congested, with an average travel time, per 10 km, at 30 minutes and 20 seconds due to recurring bottlenecks and massive commuter populations.
Ahmedabad is seeing worsening traffic as it grows as a commercial and cultural hub with an average travel time, per 10 km, is 29 minutes and 3 seconds.
Ernakulam and Jaipur traffic suffers because of an overload of tourists and insufficient road capacity, with an average travel time, per 10 km, is 28 minutes and 28 seconds in Jaipur while in Ernakulam it is 28 minutes and 30 seconds.
Despite its well-developed metro, India's capital still faces high congestion levels, ranking 10th in India with an average travel time per 10 km is 23 minutes and 24 seconds.
