The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held its annual soiree, the Costume Institute Gala 2012, on May 8. Here are a few pics of famous faces on the red carpet -- who do you think scored bigtime in the style stakes and who tanked? Vote and let us know!
Celebrities put their best couture-clad foot forward at one of the biggest fashion dos in the world yesterday.
The occasion was the New York Met Museum's Costume Institute Gala in New York and the theme this year was 'Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations' -- an exploration of the similarities between Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, both legendary talents belonging to different eras.
A-listers from Heidi Klum to Chelsea Clinton and Beyonce were in attendance, all decked to the nines. But of course, not everyone was a hit on the red carpet -- take a look and let us know what YOU think of these styles by using the poll at the bottom of each page!
Carolyn Murphy
The top model and actress donned a classy Alexander Wang gown slit down to the navel. Now that's how you wear black, what say?
Anja Rubik

Polish catwalk queen Anja garnered plenty of eyeballs in a white satin Anthony Vaccarello number. It was slit so high, she had to go sans innerwear!
Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba looked quite the goddess in her gold lame one-shoulder creation by Michael Kors.
Candice Swanepoel

Blonde bombshell Candice wore a mesh-detail blue backless affair from Rag & Bone.
Gwyneth Paltrow

The Twilight star picked up on 2012's bridal trend with this ethereal white design from Donna Karan's Atelier line.
Heidi Klum

German stunner Heidi hoped to look racy in lace with this teal Escada gown, but it kind of underwhelmed in comparison to her fellow A-listers' outfits, don't you think?
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

British beauty Rosie looked ramp-ready in her subtle shimmering Burberry gown. She made quite an entrance!
Cameron Diaz

We're not too sure of this Stella McCartney dress on Cameron. It generated quite a buzz for being environment-friendly, given that it was made of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified silk and embellished with thousands of glass beads and crystal chains, reportedly weighing 30 pounds. Unfortunately, it made the actress look rather heavy-set too!
Gisele Bundchen

Brazilian beauty Gisele opted for a black Versace gown that played up her best assets and posed with confidence for the flashbulbs.
Carey Mulligan

Also paying tribute to Prada was actress Carey, in a fishscale sequin creation that was arguably the most talked-about after the Met Gala.
Brooklyn Decker

The Sports Illustrated stunner opted for a pastel Tory Burch outfit that was rather safe, by her standards, but pretty enough.
Renee Zellweger

Renee took to the red carpet in timeless black by Emilio Pucci, complete with sheer panels, a backless cut and ruffled train.
Jessica Biel

With her stunning figure poured into a simple but striking Prada cocktail, Jessica certainly stood out at the event.
Kate Upton

Model of the moment Kate Upton was quite blinged-up in Michael Kors. Over the top or amazing? You decide.
January Jones

Mad Men star January was a refreshing vision in this bright yellow strapless outfit by designer Rachel Roy.
Anne Vyalitsyna

Victoria's Secret's new Angel spread her wings in a gorgeous tasselled Prada cocktail.
Beyonce

We were less than impressed with Bey's dramatic Givenchy gown. While the new mommy's trim bod drew praises, we can't say the same for this sheer, feathered disaster!
Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson exuded mermaid appeal in this pale peach Dolce & Gabbana ensemble.
Eva Mendes

Eva captured two trends with her citrus peplum Prada number but left us less than enthused -- she could have done better for such a posh affair!
Rihanna

The dusky Barbadian decked herself out in sensual black leather by Tom Ford and cut a rather statuesque figure.
Chelsea Clinton

Her public appearances are rare, so when Chelsea Clinton did attend the Met ball she did it in style, looking like a million dollars in this red lace and applique Oscar de la Renta floral.
Rooney Mara

Rocking sheer black, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara stood out in her pick from Givenchy.
Marc Jacobs

He's the only man on the list, but then he was wearing a dress, so he qualifies! Designer Marc Jacobs created quite a stir wearing a black lace shift over white boxers on the red carpet!
