Originally, cameras had to be loaded with film, which was then chemically developed. With the new age of digital single lens reflex cameras, it's now possible for photographers to ignore the process of developing pictures. Canon EOS 600D

The Canon EOS 600D has an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor and is capable of taking shots with a maximum resolution of 5184 x 2912 (in accordance to the 16:9 aspect ratio).

Focal length is 18-135 mm with a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000of a second and minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds. Its viewfinder has an LCD display with a resolution of 1920x1080. ISO modes include Auto and 100 to 6400 and the latter is expandable up to H (12800).

It has both a built in flash and external flash -- with wireless flash control -- and features a memory card slot for SD/SDHC/SDXC cards.

Video files can record video at 1080p HD. The body weighs 515 grams.

Nikon D3200
Price: Rs 44,572

Nikon's D3200 SLR features a 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor with the EXPEED 3 processing engine and can record 1080p HD videos. It features TTL phase detection auto focus and manual focus, with a focal length of 10-105 mm.

Images have a maximum resolution of 6016x4000. It features both an external and internal flash to go with several flash modes for Red Eye Reduction, Slow Sync and much more.

Maximum shutter speed is 1/4000of a second and minimum shutter speed is 30 seconds.

ISO rating is in steps of 1 EV, which is between 100-6400, and 1 EV above ISO, which is equivalent to 12800.

As an entry-level DSLR, it is recommended for its Guide Mode as it makes taking photographs easier for beginners.

Nikon D5200

The Nikon D5200 SLR is meant to be a combination of the D5100 and D7000 has a 24.1 megapixel CMOS sensor that can take pictures with a maximum resolution of 6016x4000 and 1080p HD videos.

ISO range is between 100-6400, with a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 of a second and minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds. Auto focus features TTL phase detection while manual focus is also available as an option.

It also has the benefit of several flash modes like Red Eye Reduction -- but its most intriguing feature is the viewfinder.

With a 1920x1080 resolution, the viewfinder can be articulated up to 170 degrees. This lets you take shots from different angles, including self-portraits. By itself, the device weighs 555 grams.

Canon EOS 550D

Canon's EOS 550D features an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor with full HD 1080p video recording. The sensor is powered by Canon's DIGIC 4 processor and can capture images at a maximum resolution of 5184x3456.

It features a built in flash and external flash, along with an ISO range of 100-6400 (whole stop increments) and ISO expansion of 12800. Maximum shutter speed is 1/4000of a second and minimum shutter speed is 30 seconds. Memory cards that can be used for storage are SD, SDHC and SDXC.

It also features auto focus and manual focus with a focal length of 18-135 mm.

The body of the camera weighs 475 grams.

Canon EOS 7D

Canon's EOS 7D features an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor but the other features which differentiate this camera from the crowd are the 100 per cent pentaprism viewfinder, a fast burst mode that shoots 8 frames per second (thanks to a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000of a second) and a 19 point auto focus system.

It weighs 820 grams on its own and can take pictures with maximum resolution of 5184x3456 along with full HD videos.

It also has a 35 mm focal length, which is equal to a 1.6x lens' focal length.

External flash and an internal pop-up flash are also included along a viewfinder that has a 1920x1080 resolution.

Though this is the price for the body alone, the Nikon D300s features a high frame rate and strong focusing system that uses 15 cross sensors to focus on 51 points.

It has a 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and can capture images at a maximum resolution of 4288x2848 and video at 1920x1080.

The viewfinder display offers 1280x720 resolution in comparison to other cameras but it features a fixed eye-level pentaprism. Focal length is 1.5x and shutter speed is 1/8000of a second with a minimum shutter speed of 30 seconds.

The body weighs 840 grams. It features external and built-in flash.

Nikon D90

The Nikon D90 is the first DSLR to capture HD video and has a nice price to go with it.

It also has an 11-point auto focus system, 12.3 megapixel Nikon DX CMOS sensor and an EXPEED CPU.

It can capture images at a maximum resolution of 4288x2848 with an ISO range of 200-3200 in steps of 1/3 EV (though an HI-1 option with 6400 ISO is also available).

Maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 of a second with minimum shutter speed being 30 seconds. The viewfinder also features a 1280x720 resolution and fixed eye-level pentaprism with the body of the device weighing 620 grams.

Flash options include external flash and built-in flash.

Sony Alpha A77

Sony's Alpha A77 is a strong contender in a market dominated by Nikon and Canon with a 24.7 megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor with a maximum image resolution of 6000x3376 at 16:9 aspect ratio.

It can also capture video at 1920x1080 resolution at 60 frames per second. Focal length is 24-75 mm with 19 points of focus.

Another interesting additions include the ability to attach a second LCD viewfinder, though the current electronic viewfinder makes it highly recommended. There is a built-in flash and pop-up auto flash.

Auto ISO range is from 100-12800 with a selectable range from 100-16000.

The body weighs 653 grams.
