Can Hero remain India's number one bike-maker?

Since the break up with Honda in 2011, Hero MotoCorp has succeeded in maintaining its numero uno position. But can it sustain the lead for long? How is Hero planning to maintains its top position?

Hero MotoCorp continues its product launch onslaught to maintain market share and remain the number one two-wheeler company in the world, says Faisal Ali Khan of MotorBeam.com

Hero MotoCorp has been India's number one two-wheeler company and is also the world's largest.

The automaker broke up with long-time partner Honda a few years back and has gone solo.

When Hero parted ways with Honda, the future of the company seemed uncertain but the automaker was quick to pull itself back up by tying up with multiple global companies for technology, like EBR, AVL and Engines Engineering.

Since the break up with Honda in 2011, Hero MotoCorp has succeeded in maintaining its numero uno position. But can it sustain the lead for long? How is Hero planning to maintains its top position?

Hero showcased a slew of products at the 2014 Auto Expo and is slowly launching them in the Indian market. The automaker put the updated Karizma twins on sale recently while last month the Passion Pro TR was launched.

Hero will now launch the Xtreme Sports and Splendor Pro Classic in the Indian market later this month.

This is in preparation for the upcoming festive season, a time when demand of vehicles see an increment.

The Hero Xtreme Sports is a sporty version of the Xtreme motorcycle, which is quite a good seller for the company. While most of the design cues are shared with the standard Xtreme, the Sports variant gets a more powerful engine.

The motor is the same Honda-sourced unit which displaces 150cc but produces 15.2 BHP instead of 14.4 BHP. The torque output remains the same at 12.8 Nm.

The Xtreme Sports will compete with the upcoming Honda 160cc bike.

The Hero Splendor Pro Classic is a very interesting bike because not only is it the cheapest cafe racer in India but also the most affordable cafe racer in the world.

While it doesn't have the punch expected from a cafe racer, the Splendor Pro Classic sure has the style and brings some excitement to the commuter segment.

It is powered by the same 97cc engine which powers the regular Splendor, producing 7.7 BHP and 8.04 Nm. The bike is likely to sell in good numbers in rural markets.
