Micronations are small, self-proclaimed nations that claim to be independent or sovereign states, with a Utopian way of life, but are not reconginsed by international organisations and usually have eccentrics as their heads of state.

Sealand

Area: 0.004 km² (approximately 1 acre). 

Location: North Sea, about 12 km off the coast of Suffolk, England in the North Sea.

About: Established in 1967, by a pirate radio broadcaster Paddy Roy Bates on an abandoned WW II sea fort called HM Fort Roughs, Sealand claims to be its own independent nation with its own flag, money, and passports.

Republic Of Molossia

Area: Approximately 0.03 km² (7.4 acres).

Location: Near Dayton, Nevada, USA.

About: Established in 1977 by Kevin Baugh, formerly known Grand Republic of Vuldstein, the nation it is still at war with the former East Germany. It has its own currency based on cookie dough. It still pays taxes to the local Nevada county.

Free Republic Of Liberland

Area: Approximately 7 km² (1,730 acres).

Location: A small unclaimed area between Croatia and Serbia.

About: Established In 2015, by lifelong prez Vit Jedlicka, a Czech right-wing politician, focusing on principles of freedom and minimal government. It has 20 'citizens'.

Hutt River Province

Area: Approximately 75 km² (29 sq mi).

Location: Western Australia.

About: Formed in 1970 by Leonard Casley, protesting against Australian farming laws, although he declared his allegiance to Elizabeth II. It operated until its closure in 2020 because of a humongous tax debt to the Australian government.

Seborga

Area: Approximately 4.5 km² (1.74 sq mi).

Location: Italy, on the French border, adminstered by Italy.

About: Tiny village Seborga is headed by farmer Giorgio Carbone, His Tremendousness Giorgio I, Prince of Seborga. It has its own flag, money and attracts loads of tourists.

Empire Of Austenasia

Area: Approximately 2.46 km² (.95 sq mi).

Location: Sutton borough, London, United Kingdom.

About: The Austenasia family started Austenasia in 2008. It’s run by a security-guard-gardener-turned-emperor, who claims the land is a 'successor' to the Roman Empire. Other pieces of land in Australia, India, Algeria, the Hebrides are part of this nation.

Republic Of Zaqistan

Area: Approximately 0.09 km² (22 acres).

Location: Utah desert, USA.

About: Artist Zaq Landsberg created Zaqistan in 2005 with monuments like the Victory Arch and Border Patrol Robots. He pays tax to Utah state but calls it tribute to maintain peace with neighbour nations.
